Valley Center Road Runner June 13 2002…

It's unusual for someone who is already a senior citizen, to "start" their musical career. Eva Fry is unusual! Without any musical training and unable to play a musical instrument she became a songwriter, speaker and entertainer.

Mrs. Fry will perform in her own show at the Del Mar Fair on June 19, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. on the San Diego Showcase Stage. Eva is 61. The grandmother of eight and just starting her musical career. Performing is Eva's lifetime dream. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a performer but came from a troubled family which provided no opportunities. She married young, became a stay-at-home mom and got involved in the family business.

When her children successfully grew up and moved out on their own, Mrs. Fry rekindled her hidden dream and began to learn the words to old time hits. She took over her son's old karaoke machine and entertained at senior centers. She took a speech class to overcome her lack of confidence and a stand up comedy class to satisfy her need to encourage people to laugh and be happy. She performed wherever she could.

At 58 she began to write music, something she had no idea she could do. Realizing that it was necessary for her to learn how to play an instrument she took guitar and piano lessons and 'can now accompany herself on the 5 CD's she recently completed.

Two gifted people helped, inspired and encouraged her, Justin Gray of Gray Music, the music director of Lawrence Welk Theatre, and Marci Carr, Justin produced all of her songs and Marci Carr, a professional performer, is her music teacher.

Mrs. Fry loves her new life and hopes to inspire others. She shares, her story in a seminar she teaches at the Escondido and Vista Adult Schools, entitled "You Must Have a Dream". She proves it's never too late to live your dreams.

Senior Songstress: Longtime Valley resident Eva Fry has learned to let life inspire her no matter what her age. Eva began writing and recording her moving spiritual ballads with the' intention of leaving a kind of legacy of faith and love for her children and grandchildren. More than two dozen songs later, her singing and performing have come to mean more to her than she ever imagined.

Eva, who by day runs the mild-mannered business Fry's Equipment with husband Al, has sung her songs, including "We All Need More Love in Our World," "I Thought I Could Live Without You" and "Straight an4' Narrow Path," at many San Diego events, including nursing homes, home associations and the Del Mar Fair. Just last week she performed at a small concert in Balboa Park. She's just written a new song about Valley Center with the mysterious and unlikely name "Valley Center." She'll be performing it in a few weeks at Western Days.

Eva gets a little help in the arranging and recording departments from fellow Church of Latter-day Saints member and musical director of the Welk theater; Justin Gray, who has a full-fledged studio in his home.

Says the self-described late bloomer, "I'd like older people who think their lives are over to know they still have time to live all their dreams. They should never give up. Look at me. I'm almost 60; who'd have ever thought I'd behaving so much fun now?"

She Writes the songs: Eva Fry hopes her newest will be VC’s official song

The VC resident has written what she hopes will become the official song of Valley Center.

"I write music and one day I was driving home and it came to me: Another sunny day in Valley Center," Mrs. Fry recalls;

"I thought about all the wonderful things we have and r was inspired to write." By the time she got home she had almost all of the song written in her head.

Eva and her husband, Al and I have lived off Lilac for about nine years now.

"We can hear the coyotes at night. We can drive and see the oranges and the lilac right now is so pretty."

Obviously someone with such a poetic turn of mind would naturally gravitate towards music and song composition.

The song is available on a CD entitled Valley Center & Other Favorites. This is Mrs. Fry's second CD. The other is a collection of gospel music: Inspiring Songs of Praise.

The producer of the latest album is Justin Gray, the well-known music director at Welk Theater. Gray composed the Escondido Song that has been officially adopted as the city's anthem.

When Mrs. Fry first started writing songs she didn't know anything. about music, so she took guitar and piano lessons Marsi Carr, a local well known musician.

She composed several songs during a road trip to Las Vegas.

Mrs. Fry is the grandmother eight, and many members of family have been more than tie bit puzzled by what she's up to with the music lessons. "But they are pretty proud of now," she says. Mrs. Fry also does volunteer work with San Diego senior, groups and MCd the San Diego Senior Talent Show at the Del Mar Fair last year.

She also uses her musical and speaking talents at Juvenile Hall, 0 influence the lives of the young people who have made mistakes in their lives.

The theme of her lectures is Be a Winner in Life. She recently wrote a song for juveniles entitled You're a Child of God.

Both CDs are available at the Rose Wrangler gift shop, 28630 VC Rd.

Mrs. Fry has been invited to sing her song at Western Days.

"I'm hoping it will become our Valley Center song," she tells The Roadrunner "It's very~ simple and tells a story. It would be great for kids to sing and for marketing VC. It really paints a picture."

Mrs. Fry has also written a book, also titled Be A Winner in Life. She says she needs an editor to help her whip the book into publishable shape

The book is written to young people and their parents. According to Mrs. Fry "It's a spiritual book that teaches truth and encourages children to believe in themselves and make choices. It's not just for troubled kids, it's for kids before they get into trouble. It's written so they won't make wrong choice. It talks a lot about being free and allowing yourself to be who you are born to be."

"Juvenile Hall has six hundred kids in it any one time, ages 10-18. A lot of them will spend the rest of their lives in tragedy," she says.

Each Monday for the past five years she has gone down to the hall to minister to the youngsters.

"I see kids whose grandparents were in there and a lot of kids who just made one mistake and messed up their lives."

She teaches them that it’s OK to make mistakes if you learn from them. She also sings and tells jokes.

I’ve had some really remarkable experiences from some kids," she says.
