My family is my
greatest blessing. My husband, Al and I have been married for forty-four years.
We have three grown children who are well-adjusted, good people who are now
raising our nine grandchildren. Life is good. I attribute that to some of the
choices I made in my young life. I choose to be a full time mom. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to be a
stay-at-home mom. My husband and my children were my life for many years and
today I reap the blessings of that choice. We are a close family and love each
other.
What were the
things, which helped me, accomplish my goal of having a happy family? I was
determined to stick to it and do all I could to create a better family than the
one I came from. My father was an alcoholic and mother emotionally disturbed.
There was no family love or individual encouragement. My siblings and I were on
survival mode. I was determined to create a better life. I learned to endure,
communicate feelings and make my family my #1 priority. Even though I helped my
husband in his business, my kids were the most important thing to me.
I was
determined to make my marriage last and did all I could to do that. I tried to
be a good homemaker and be a helpmate to my husband. I encouraged my kids and helped them know I loved them. I tried
to keep communicate open with them. I tried not to be too hard on them but
expected them to work and be responsible. One of the best things I did was to
find a church, which taught me how to be a good mother, how to love and one
which gave them spiritual and temporal opportunities for growth. I joined the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints when I was 30 years old and that
decision was the one thing, which has had the greatest influence on us as a
family and as individuals, than anything else I did. The Church taught us not
to use alcohol or drugs, to go to church, to study the scriptures and to pray.
We were told we had a purpose in life and that God loved us, as did Jesus
Christ. That understanding helped me through many trials.
To survive busy
times occupied with husband and children. I took time for myself, when there
was time. I took classes. I read a lot. When I saw there were changes in
society, which needed to be made, for the sake of my family, I got involved. I
began an anti pornography group and as a result we had porno books taken off
the shelves of the stores we would frequent as a family and I was also a part
of having a law in Canada being enacted, against child pornography.
Now that I am
older, I have discovered something about being a stay-a-home mom. There were
times that when the kids were home, I
wondered if ever there would be time for me. Now I know there is. I’m so glad I
did things in the proper order because after my wonderful kids grew up and got
married. I began singing and entertaining and at the age of sixty began writing
music. The most wonderful feeling I have inside is because the part of my life
with my kids has turned out so well, l and now I have time for me and I’m not
too old.
It’s really
true – family is the most important part of life and if we do a good job – we
have the blessings of a peaceful older age and time for ourselves.
